Infertility of unknown origin

The term “unexplained infertility” refers to those cases where no underlying cause could be found after conducting a complete infertility testing on both partners.

Recent advances in assisted conception investigations concerning the diagnosis, the basic infertility testing and the clinical application of laboratory techniques are gradually reducing the number of cases with unexplained infertility.

The enormous complexity of the reproductive process makes that infertility remains unexplained in 15% of the cases.

In some cases it is only during fertility treatment such as an IVF cycle when abnormalities in the eggs, the fertilization or the embryo development can be detected. These problems cannot be found during the preliminary testing.
